“I lift my eyes to the hills –
where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord,
the maker of heaven and earth.
He will not let your foot slip –
he who watches over you will not slumber;
indeed, he who watches over Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.
The Lord watches over you –
the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
the sun will not harm you by day,
nor the moon by night.
The Lord will keep you from all harm –
he will watch over your life;
the Lord will watch over your coming and going
both now and forevermore.”
– Psalm 121
O for wisdom and power – to comfort the broken-hearted and the sorrowful, to heal the wounded and sick, to make right the injustices, to give courage to the fearful and strength to the weak, to transform hate into love and anger into peace, to resolve the ever-deepening differences that divide us. Yet I am woefully deficient. So in my helplessness I lift my eyes to the hills, toward the One and Only source of Wisdom and Power – the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth, who will not let your foot slip, who watches over each of us and neither slumbers nor sleeps. Will you join me in these troubling times in our nation and world, and let us lift our eyes to the hills, toward Him who is the source of all wisdom and power?
